Why should you trust me?
Before I made art my full-time career, I worked for over 10 years in the corporate sector, first in adminstration, and then in marketing and creative services. I have worked for the RSC.. What I learnt in my own career is that it can be hard to balance getting things done with innovating or producing work that makes you stand out. I can be difficult to pitch a new idea to your stakeholders or manager, when what we did before was fine...but you know something new will get you noticed/ How do you justifuy the cost? in time and money? How do you make sure it works?
On the flipside of this, I have often worked with creatives and needed to give feedback, how can we make this a win, win? Improv teaches 'yes and' which makes the scene move forward, and that's fine and well, but how can I apply that to feedback when it's really not right?
I worked for three years at Cambridge Judge Business School within the MBA Marketing team, and I met students with a few years of business under their belt, who were beginning further study of leadership,
What I learnt from them was as young entrepreneurs, they are being told contradictory messages about failure, on the one hand they are in a world-leading university, and failure is not an option, on the other hand, that entrepreneurs need to be innovative and creative - and to be truly creative, we need to be unafraid of failure. What improv can teach us that failure witin context is fine. We don't want a cult of failure, a diliberate failure, but that we can grow and learn from mistakes.
Another lesson was that
I still work with small and large businesses as a graphic designer, and I am often pitching myself to them, introducing myself, perhaps coming to existing projects or teams. How can I do this effectively? How do I collaborate and make sure things are a win win?
